Wales is a country that breathes Rugby. It is widely recognized as THE national sport and intricately woven into the country’s culture. However, on the 3rd of June, in the capital city of Cardiff, the oval ball will be replaced with a round one as Wales hosts the Union of European Football Association’s (UEFA final) Champions League final match – the best football in the world – for the first time.
Real Madrid (Spain) and Juventus (Italy) will play for the UEFA Champions League title at Millennium Stadium, supported by over 74,500 stadium fans. Both clubs won their respective national league titles this season representing two different schools of football.
Real Madrid is one of the fiercest football clubs in Europe, beginning in the mid 1950’s when they won five times in seven years. They are considered by some to be the greatest team of all time. As the UEFA Champions League (UCL) most awarded club with eleven trophies, Real Madrid is led by Zinedine Zidane’s (aka “Zizou”) magic baton, that counts Cristiano Ronaldo as one of its stars, to conquer Europe again. Even Gareth Bale, Welsh idol player who was born in Cardiff, and currently on the disabled list, will be routing for his team from the sidelines.
On the other hand, Juventus is an equally strong club having won 63 official competitions, more than any other team in Italy. Juventus ranks fourth in Europe and eighth in the world with the most trophies won and is widely known for it’s unstoppable defense. Led by Gianluigi Buffon, goalkeeper, Buffon is the most capped European international player ever. He is widely regarded by players, pundits, and managers to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time known for his “outstanding shot-stopping.” The 39-year old Italian is looking to win his first international title with the club. If his dream comes true, he promises to celebrate the win with a great dinner accompanied of his own brand of wine!
Of course, the tickets are sold out. But, if you are a football fan and were not lucky enough to score a ticket, it’s still possible to experience the energy and passion of the UEFA final match as you watch it.
