It’s Shark Week! That time of year where the fiercest beasts of the deep ocean get their time to shine. Since 1988, Shark Week has aimed to demystify these often misunderstood creatures.
Shark Facts:
- There are more than 400 species of sharks
- Sharks pre-date dinosaurs by 200 million years
- Most sharks hunt in the evening and night
- Sharks can detect blood in the water at one part per million
- Baby sharks are called “pups”; they are born with a full set of teeth
Conceived by the Discovery Channel and originally comprised of TV-based programming, the Shark Week phenomenon has spread across channels to include web and social media. The week has inspired arts & crafts, provided a theme for “Staycations”, and shaped merchandise.
